Knaak was born in Sheboygan and later moved to Milwaukee to study art where he obtained a degree in commercial art and studied painting and drawing with the late James Prohl of Atelier Prohl.  He is a realist painter creating current works in oil and acrylic from his Sheboygan studio.  His award-winning work is found in collections for the American Family Insurance Corp.; UW-Madison Hospitals and Clinics; Johnsonville Sausage World Headquarters, Blue Harbor Resort; McDonalds Corp. and in many private collections.  Dale created the first public mural (pictured below) in historic downtown Plymouth, WI.  He divides his time between personal painting, commissioned works and commercial mural projects.
